Two Adjacent Class II Restorations

Method Developed by Dr Chris Brooks, New Zealand

Finally, there is a way to restore two adjacent Class II restorations at the same time AND get a tight contact! This method was developed by Dr Chris Brooks BDS, Bay of Plenty, New Zealand. Thanks Chris!

1. If possible, prime and bond both restorations to avoid bonding the matrix to the composite resin.
First place a conventional sectional matrix adjacent to the MO cavity as shown.

2. Select an Inward Tri-Clip and place it on the mesial side of the sectional matrix that is already there. Open the Tri-Clip wide to accommodate the sectional matrix.

3. Release the Tri-Wedge and pull through as usually. Note the close fit of the matrices against the gingival margins in the photo.

4. Restore the MO cavity as usual and light-cure.

The purpose of the following steps is reduce the double thickness of matrix foil down to a single thickness.

5. Use the forceps to open the Tri-Clip a little.

6. Remove the MO sectional matrix with diamond coated tweezers or artery forceps. Return the Tri-Clip to its original position. If the sectional matrix was coated with a bonding agent, use an explorer/probe to release the bond prior to removal.

7. Restore the DO cavity as usual.

7. Remove the Tri-Clip and finish the restorations. (these need a little more finish but you get the idea!)

Here's another case done in the mouth using this technique. It works really well!
